But it is my fault Max. If I would have just told him where I was this wouldn't have happened. Max sighed unhappily. He didn't believe that were true. He was about to speak, but she beat him to it. He just wanted to know where I was. He frowned again. He didn't like to see Marie so worked up over this. They had just met and already there were these kinds of terrible things happening. Maybe it was his fault. Maybe he was just bad luck. He glanced at the ground for a moment. Jack only wanted to make sure that I was okay and I hung up on him. His eyes went wide as she started to cry again. He stopped suddenly, gently putting his hand on her shoulder to stop her from walking, as well. It was all my fault.
"Marie, hey, woah, back up a sec..." He said lightly, stepping in front of her. He thought about smiling, but couldn't find the strength to do so. "This is not your fault at all. You couldn't have predicted what Jack's reactions were going to be. Even if you did tell him where you were, who's to say he wouldn't have come after us anyway?" He shrugged, flashing her a small, warm smile as he very gently wiped the tears from her face as they fell from her eyes.

Marie moved away from Max. "It is my fault." She said, her voice was shakey and her body started to shake also. She wiped the rest of her tears away. "I know you may not see it that way, but I do. Thank you for trying to help though." She said her voice fading away.

It is my fault. Max sighed once more. He was starting to run out of ideas to make her feel better. He was no longer certain of what to say or do. A frown crossed his face as he hung his head, his black hair falling over his face, hiding his sorrowful expression. I know you may not see it that way, but I do. Thank you for trying to help though. He looked up again, watching her for a moment or two before getting an idea.
"Alright. Fine. It is your fault." He agreed nonchalantly with a shrug. He shoved his hands into his pockets. "Yah screwed up, kid." He stepped closer to her, crossing his arms over his chest as he stood behind Marie. He narrowed his eyes a little. Really, he didn't think it was her fault at all, nor that she screwed up, but, if that's the way she wanted to think, he would play along. "You made a mistake. Everyone does. Even me, believe it or not." He added the last bit jokingly, a smile crossing his face again. God knows Max made many mistakes in his life. Mistakes that were hard to make right again. A breeze blew his hair back into his face, and almost immeadiately Max threw his head back to push it away. "Sitting around here upset over it isn't going to help either you or Jack."

Marie sighed. He's right, it was just a mistake. Everyone does do it. She looked up at Max. She had a faint smile on her face. "Well we shoul..." She broke off, turning around and hugging Max. She couldn't believe that he had been so supportive. She forgot everything that happened, leaning her head against his chest. "Thank you so much!" She said quietly, laughing a little with a smile on her face. She didn't know why all of a sudden she felt happy, but she did. And she liked it.

Max smiled back at her as he let his arms fall at his sides again. Well we shoul... He tilted his head to the side in question, not exactly expecting her to turn around and him him. His heart jumped in his chest as she did so, his eyes going wide for a moment before he laughed. He wrapped his arms around her waist gently, returning her hug. Thank you so much! Really, he didn't see why she was thanking him. He didn't do much, or so he didn't think he did. But he thought it best not to argue. "No problem... Like I said, I'm glad to help you." He said jovially. He did quite enjoy Marie's company. She seemed very nice, and was glad he would be spending the next twelve months of his life with her rather than someone else. Plus, she was giving up her own time to 'watch' him... the least he could do was be a little bit of comfort to her when she needed it.

"You didn't even know that you did help me, did you?" She asked, laughing. (wb. )

You didn't even know that you did help me, did you? Max smiled, shrugging slightly. "Well, I hope that I did, or else I probably sound pretty foolish about now..." He said, laughing as well. At least she was laughing again, and showing at least a few signs of happiness. Max was glad for that. He never liked to see his friends in such pain; it reminded him of the pain he felt throughout his childhood, and he didn't want anyone to have to feel that way.

Marie smiled. "Alright, I think we should be going to the cafeteria." She said, letting go of him as she started to walk towards the building. "I think I should talk to Highmore too." She said half to herself.

Alright, I think we should be going to the cafeteria. Max nodded, letting go of her as well. His smile widened. "Sounds like a plan." He said with another shrug. He began followed her toward the building nonchalantly, turning his head away for a moment. He looked back at Marie, however, when she spoke again. I think I should talk to Highmore too. He tilted his head to the side in question. Highmore? Why would she want to talk to him on her own free will? Why would anyone? He debated on whether or not it would be rude to ask about it, since the statement was not really directed at him. He decided to ask. "What would you want to talk to him for...?" Max asked, the depth of his voice decreasing. He lowered his head a little as he spoke, his eyes growing narrow. Max had always had somewhat of a grudge against that man, if it was not obvious enough from the previous events that happened that day.

Marie looked at Max, smiling. "I was going to ask him if we could skip today's classes so that we could have time to get to know each other." She said lauging a little. This wasn't the whole truth, because they did kind of get to know each other. At least for a little bit. She laughed at the thought.

I was going to ask him if we could skip today's classes so that we could have time to get to know each other. Max paused for a moment. Was she serious? Asking about skipping a class? Where was the point in that? He burst out into laughter, finding the idea quite funny. Asking to skip a class... Max saw no point. He skipped class a lot, suddenly asking Highmore if it was okay seemed silly to him after doing it so many times without permission. Did she really expect the headmaster to let them, with Max's record? "...Asking to skip a class?" He repeated, his laughter dying down, though the humor stayed in the tone of his voice, "Where's the point in that? Do you really think that SOB will let me skip a day of class after all the days I never went in the past four years?"

Marie turned on him, her face serious. "I was going to ask him that way he would know what we were doing. That way I didn't get in trouble." She said with anger in her voice. She looked at him, her anger dying down. She had just lost her temper on him. Would that push him away? She didn't mean to, but she had to stick up for Highmore. He trusted her. She sighed. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to snap at you like that. It..it just irritates me when people talk about other people behind their backs." She said, giving him a sympathetic, but stern look. She turned back around and hurried over to the Cafeteria. She gasped when she saw that someone was leaning against the wall, right next to the door.
A boy with brown hair and brown eyes leaned against the wall. He had his arms crossed. He was waiting for Maire. He saw her and stood up straight. Jack moved his hair out of his face watching Marie. "Marie! I..I need to talk to you." He called to her, walking slowly over.

I was going to ask him that way he would know what we were doing. That way I didn't get in trouble. Max's amused smile disappeared quickly, becoming replaced with surprise and a bit of sadness in his eyes. He frowned as she spoke, looking away quickly. He didn't mean to offend her, but he had never really thought asking to skip a class would work, even if it was for a legitimate reason. He stayed silent, keeping his head down like some kind of puppy who was just yelled at for doing something wrong. He turned his eyes back up to her again as she spoke. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to snap at you like that. It..it just irritates me when people talk about other people behind their backs.
Max stared at her for a moment before flicking his hair away from his face. He shrugged. The edges of his lips curved upward for a moment as if he were to smile, but they fell again quickly. "... It's okay. I'm sorry, too. I was.. out of line." He said with a sigh. He looked up again slowly, narrowing his eyes at the sight of that Jack kid. He glanced at Marie, then at Jack as he began to walk over. He wasn't fond of the kid already, but if Marie was, Max would be civil, or at least tolerate him. "... You gonna talk to him?" Max whispered under his breath so only Marie could hear. He raised his eyebrows in question, his eyes softening as he looked at Marie curiously.

Marie gave Max a faint smile as he apologized. She sighed. "It's fine, I just shouldn't have snapped like that." She said with laughter in her voice. She turned and looked at Jack. Her eyes should fear and pain. "I don't know.." She replied back to Max, almost softer than he had asked. She was thinking about her choices as Jack walked closer and closer. She turned to Max. "Can you play along?" She asked him in a whisper. She looked at Max, hoping he would say yes. She had a plan up her sleeve and didn't know what would happen if Max said no.
"Marie! Please I just need to talk to you." Jack said again as he became only a few steps closer. He didn't want to push her away, but he didn't want her near that boy. He let out a sigh. "Please?!" He asked, desperately.

It's fine, I just shouldn't have snapped like that. Max smiled faintly and nodded slowly. He still felt a little bad that he had upset her, but he tried to supress it. No good would come from feeling terrible, especially with that Jack kid around. I don't know.. He turned his green eyes up toward Jack again. They looked somewhat hostile and defensive, though it seemed like Max was trying to hide it... unsuccessfully, however. His lips formed a straight line across his face. He looked very serious about the whole situation. Can you play along? Max glanced at Marie, then at Jack. He was a little confused by this; play along? What did that mean? He shrugged, nodding slowly, his face softening as he turned his head to look at her.
