"Back off." Jack yelled. He pushed Marie out of the way. She fell to the ground, crying. She watched as the two started to push each other. She checked to make sure Jack hadn't broken any skin or hurt her badly. She stood up, brushing the dirt off of her. "Jack stop!" She yelled pushing in between the two. "Go away and leave me, leave us alone!" She took Max's hand and backed away from Jack. "I don't want to ever talk to you again! We are through!" She yelled at him, tears streaming down her face.
Jack looked at Marie his eyes burning with anger. "You little.." He broke off. "I don't care if we are over!" He yelled turning away. He stalked off, muttering under his breath.

Back off. Max glared at Jack, about to say something but stopped himself as Marie fell to the ground. "... Marie!" He gasped softly, concern and worry filling his eyes. He gritted his teeth as he turned to Jack again. Oh, how he wanted revenge. He wanted to rip the kids head off. But, he held his violence as Marie stepped in front of them. He backed up a little, his jaw opening slightly as he breathed heavily through his mouth. Jack stop! Go away and leave me, leave us alone!
His vengeful thoughts and ideas disappeared in an instant as Marie took hold of his hand. His anger was suddenly taken over by solicitude as his eyes fell onto Marie, his gaze softening. He glanced at her arm, making sure he hadn't made any kind of marks on her. He would surely pay if he did. He stood close to Marie, holding onto her hand in comfort as she yelled. I don't want to ever talk to you again! We are through!
Max's face grew serious as he looked toward Jack from under his eyelashes. You little.. I don't care if we are over! Max gritted his teeth again. Though he looked a little calmer than before, his muscles were still tense. His green eyes clouded with sympathy for Marie as he gazed upon her. With every tear she cried he felt his heart ache more and more. He hated seeing her so upset. He didn't even know her that well, but no one deserved to be part of what Max had just witnessed.
Max embraced Marie gently with his free hand, still holding her hand with his other one. He held her close to her, trying to be of some kind of support to her. He closed his eyes tightly for a moment as he listened to her soft, muffled cries. He tried to imagine what she must've felt like. He had suffered through death and hate through his life, but never physical abuse. Sure, his father had abused him, but neglectfulness was very different from hitting and yelling.
He wished there was a way to make her feel better, to make this whole ordeal just go away, but he knew there was none. He opened his eyes slowly, staring downward, sorrow in his eyes. "It's alright, Marie..." He said softly, his voice low and hushed. He stroked her hair gently and soothingly, though he knew it would take awhile for the pain to ease. "...It'll be alright."

Marie continued to cry quietly. She had been so embarrassed and hurt. She wrapped her arms around Max, squeezing him tightly. She slowly let go, looking down at the ground. "I..I'm so sorry." She whispered. She wiped her tears, though more came. She slowly sat down on the grass that was nearby. She thought of one of her favorite songs and started to sing it quietly. If I lay here. If I just lay here, Would you lie with me and just forget the world? She slowly started to calm down. She sat on the grass her arms on her knees and her head resting on her arms. She sighed. "How could this happen?" She asked almost silently, closing her eyes.

Max hugged her back, giving her a warm smile. It faded as she let go, however. He let go of her as well, stepping back as she apologized. I..I'm so sorry. He looked kind of surprised that she would say such a thing. He followed her and sat down beside her, shaking is head, "There's nothing to be sorry for." He said softly, feeling terrible for her. He wrapped his arm around her gently, holding her close to him in support to her. He wasn't leaving, not now. He couldn't just leave her. He listened to her as she sang 'Chasing Cars' by Snow Patrol to herself. He smiled softly. He, too, rather liked that song.
How could this happen? He looked down for a moment, unsure how to answer her question. He paused for a moment before looking at her again, singing the rest of other part of the song she was singing. "Forget what we're told, before we get too old... show me a garden that's bursting into life." He sang softly, almost in a whisper, another attempt to comfort her. Luckily for her, Max was a pretty good singer. He wouldn't want to sing lead vocals in a band or anything, but he could probably pull off backup and playing the bass pretty well. He smiled faintly at her, his eyes soft and caring.

Marie looked up at Max. She faintly smiled as he sang part of the song. She wipped the rest of the tears from her face and no more came. She sighed leaning against Max. She was glad that she would be spending the rest of the year with him. "Thank you." She said softly, closing her eyes. She was grateful that Max had been there for her. She was actually suprised that he had helped her, but she scolded herself for judging him.

Max's smile grew wider as she stopped crying. Well, at least she was feeling a little better, or starting to. Max never really had to live through a break-up, especially one of the same nature that Marie had gone through, but he was no stranger to the pain losing someone you love cost, and that was kind of similiar... right? Thank you. Max nodded slowly as she leaned on him. Well, maybe having a stalker wouldn't be so bad. Maybe Highmore wasn't totally and completely senile after all. His plan was pretty much ingenious. Perhaps he could run down to the office and thank him later... nah. "No problem... I'm happy to help." He said cordially.

Marie laughed a little. "You always seem to know what to say to make me smile, or laugh in this case." She said looking at him, sadness still in her eyes. She looked down at her arm where Jack had grabbed her, it was a bright red and it stung a little bit. She sighed looking down at the grass. At least grass doesn't have to deal with what I have too. She thought to herself.

Max’s smile broadened as she laughed. Oh, how he loved to hear her laugh again. You always seem to know what to say to make me smile, or laugh in this case. He stared at her for a moment, a little surprised she would say such a thing. Well, he was happy he was able to make her smile. He always liked making people laugh, or just cheering them up. He was a little unsure how to reply, however. ”…Well, that’s the first time someone’s told me that, too.” He said with a small chuckle.
Max noticed her looking towards her arm. He turned his eyes toward it, as well, noticing the mark on her. His smile faded as he felt a pain in his heart for her. He must’ve really grabbed her hard for it to be that red. ”Does it hurt?” He asked suddenly as he looked at Marie again sweetly from under his eyelashes, still feeling very sorry for her, and still wishing there was a way to help her further. But, the only thing he could think to do at the moment was be there for her.

Marie looked up at Max. She smiled at him. I can't believe everyone thinks he is such a horible person. She thought to herself. Her smile faded and she sighed, looking back down at her arm. "I'll be fine." She told him, not completly answering his question. She couldn't believe that Jack had done this, he had never hurt her in anyway before. She felt like she was going to cry again, so she looked away from Max. He shouldn't be involved in this. She told herself.

Max smiled back at her, though it disappeared suddenly as Marie turned away. He felt terrible for her, for what she must be going through. I'll be fine. Max frowned at this. "Are you sure?" He asked persistently, "I can get you some ice or something if it stings..." His voice trailed off, its volume lowering as he finished his sentence. Sure, ice probably wouldn't stop any kind of emotional pain she might be feeling, but Max still thought it best to offer. Max inhaled deeply as he gazed upon her miserable face, trying to stay strong and supportive for her. He gently rubbed her arm with his fingertips, very lightly and consolingly running them over her skin.

Marie looked over at Max. She gave him a faint smile. "Maybe we should just go to the cafeteria. They should have some ice there." She said, starting to stand up. She wiped the grass off of her with her good hand.

Maybe we should just go to the cafeteria. They should have some ice there. Max nodded slowly, standing up as well. "Sure, if you want." He said simply. He shrugged, shoving his hands into the pockets of his jeans as he normally did. He glanced toward the main building, than at Marie again, waiting for her. Maybe the cafeteria will help get her mind off what happened, with all the people and of course, food, and other such things, though Max thought it a little improbable.

Marie smiled faintly as she started to walk towards the cafeteria. She held her arm up, trying not to hit it with her other arm. She slightly looked up towards the sky, trying not to cry again. "What a day this has been." She said quietly half to herself. "I'm sorry that you had to see that. You shouldn't have needed to be involved." She told Max. "Jack has never hurt me before." Marie looked at Max, wiping a tear from her eye. She unfortunitally started to cry again. "God, I'm such a baby." She said laughing a little as she wiped the rest of her tears away.

Max smiled as well as he began to walk beside her. He watched her intently, his smile turning into a frown for a moment. It was obvious she was trying her best not to cry. He sighed. What a day this has been. I'm sorry that you had to see that. You shouldn't have needed to be involved. Max shrugged. "You don't need to be sorry... It's not your fault." He answered softly. Really, he didn't think it was all her that fault. Who could've predicted her boyfriend would come crashing in like a raving lunatic? Jack has never hurt me before. God, I'm such a baby. Max frowned again. "Awh, no your not, Marie." He said soothingly. "You have a right to be upset. This kind of a situation is... traumatizing. It would be heartless of you not to cry or have some kind of emotional reaction." His voice grew serious as he explained his thoughts to her. Max most definitely knew what he was talking about when he spoke on traumatizing situations. Heck, the majority of his life was one big traumatizing event.

"But it is my fault Max. If I would have just told him where I was this wouldn't have happened." She said, annoyed with herself. What she said was right. Jack probably wouldn't have done anything at all. "He just wanted to know where I was." She said quietly. She understood why Jack was so protective and she blamed herself for what just happened. His father had been shot to death and ever since then Jack had become very overprotective. "Jack only wanted to make sure that I was okay and I hung up on him." She started to cry again. "It was all my fault." She cried. How could I be so stupid! She asked herself silently.
