There is no need to apologize to me, Max. Max opened his eyes slowly, looking at Marie. He felt his heart sink as he saw her cry. "Yes there is. I've treated you cruelly all morning and you don't deserve it." He said softly, gently taking his right hand and wiping the tear away from her cheek, his eyes still deeply hurt and miserable, yet he also seemed concerned for her, care evident through all of the pain in his expression. His lips formed a straight line across his face as he gazed upon her, the shaking in his hands decreasing a bit, though it didn't take away from any of the panic and hurt he felt.

Marie shook her head. "I un..understand what you’re going through." She said, almost silently. Her voice was decreasing as she talked to Max and also as she listened to him. Her heart ached with even more pain than it had before. Flashbacks of her memories flooded her mind. Her gaze met with Max's and she just looked into his green eyes for the longest time. Marie's eyes were filled with pain and depression, but yet they were also filled with desperation and understanding. How all of those emotions can show in someone's eyes, might be confusing to someone who has never lost anyone. But to people who have been through extreme tragedies, they should have been able to find similarities.

I un..understand what you’re going through. Max suddenly fell silent. He was kind of unsure what she meant. How could she understand? He wasn't sure if anyone on the planet could understand how he felt, or all of the twisted emotions in his heart. He didn't argue, however. He didn't want to make things worse then he already had made them. He nodded slowly, staring deeply into Marie's eyes, as if trying to see what she was talking about, as if trying to look into her soul.
Finally, he broke his stare, gently pulling Marie closer to his body, holding her gently in his arms. He closed his eyes again and sighed deeply. He wished he could find the right words to say to her, though nothing came to him. Nothing seemed certain anymore; everything was so messed up and frustrating and heartwrenching. He wished he could've done something more for April. Then maybe neither Marie nor Max would be this kind of position, reminiscing about old childhood traumas and past heartbreaks.

Marie finally broke her gaze away from Max as he gave her a tighter hug. A very faint smile was on her face. She stood there arms wrapped around Max's body. She just didn't know what else to say or do. Was there anything to say? Marie rested her head on Max's chest, sighing. Her brown eyes slowly closed. She ran her fingers softly down his back.

Max couldn't help but feel a pleasant shiver run down his spine as she moved her fingers down his back, along his thin shirt, against his skin. He tried to lose himself, to just let go, to free himself from all skepticism and his horrid memories. However, they kept coming back to him, like a freakish nightmare that as much as you wanted to forget you never could, even after the dream moved on. It was always there, ingrained in your mind, your soul, haunting you, hovering over you, restraining you from doing things you may enjoy. That's exactly how poor Max felt: without freedom, unable to love again for fear of... well, many things. Fear of losing another person close to him, fear of hurting April, even if she was dead. Yet, at the same time, he felt like he deserved it for what he did to her. He didn't deserve to love again, even if he wanted to.
Suddenly, Max lifted his head. His eyes opened quickly. His jaw dropped slowly as in inhaled through his mouth. He held his breath for a moment, however, a sightly horrified look over his face. No, maybe it wasn't horror... just a longing, like the expression an addict has over his or her face when they crave whatever drug they were hooked on. An empty feeling washed over him, though it was different than the loneliness he had felt before, when he yearned for April.
He broke from Marie suddenly, turning his back to her as he walked back to the dresser. He felt his hands shaking with anticipation as he reached into his pocket, taking out his black lighter. It was obvious what he wanted, what he felt he needed. He pulled a cigarette out of the packet on the dresser and put it in his mouth swiftly. He lit it, took a drag, and closed his eyes, looking highly satisfied.
Well, this was horrible. Max's third cigarette in, what, about an hour, perhaps even less? The craving for them had seemed to have increased greatly in the past few days. He assumed it was simply because he couldn't have them as often as he used to and without worrying about getting caught and going to jail, it was hard to say if that was the real reason, though.

Marie kept silent. But when Max moved away from her she opened her eyes immediately. She looked at Max for a few seconds but turned her head away. She was looking somewhere, anywhere, as long as it wasn't at Max. She heard the lighter make the noise and knew that Max had lit another cigarette. Marie sighed ever so lightly. She moved over to his bed, not wanting to stay in the room. She knew that Max needed someone with him though. She feared that he would do something horrible if she left. So, Marie quietly sat down on the bed. Her eyes slowly closed as she put her head in her hands, which were resting on her knees.

Max opened his eyes and pulled the cigarette from his mouth stiffly. He heard Marie’s movements behind him, though he didn’t turn to look at her. His heart sank in his chest. He felt like he was not only destroying himself by acting this way, so miserable and depressed, but Marie, as well. Max never intended to hurt Marie. He most-definitely did not want to bring her down to the pain and suffering he was feeling. It wasn’t her burden to bear. He didn’t want to do this to her, and yet he wasn’t sure if he could pull himself out of the hurt he was feeling. Suddenly, Max glanced around the room frantically, a wave of claustrophobia overtaking him. Perhaps if he cleaned himself up a bit, went out somewhere, did something productive… maybe it could help take his mind off April.
Max sighed softly, trying to relax himself as he took another quick puff of his cigarette before turning his body to face Marie. He frowned and took a few steps over to her. He bent down in front of her, gently putting his hand on her knee to alert her of his presence. ”I’m sorry I put you through all of this.” He whispered quietly, looking up at her, his green eyes sad and placid. He felt like he needed to apologize after such a rough morning. He had treated her horribly, and Max certainly didn’t think Marie deserved it. After all, she was giving him a break with Highmore. She had promised not to turn him in for smoking, and he was doing a terrible job of repaying her for it.

Marie's body tensed for a moment feeling Max's hand rest on her knee. Her eyes opened slowly. She lifted her head up a little, looking Max in the eyes. She shook her head slowly. Her hand fell to his, griping it securely. She sighed. " You didn't do anything wrong Max. Why do you keep apologizing? " She said softly feeling tears run down her cheeks again. But her lips formed a smile. Her hand moved towards his face. It was placed on his cheek, but slowly ran down his neck and came to a stop on his shoulder. Marie gently sat down on the floor in front of Max.

Max held her gaze, though his expression was uncertain and mixed with emotions. He felt his heart sink in his chest as he looked down at their hands, now intertwined. You didn't do anything wrong Max. Why do you keep apologizing? He hesitated. How could she say he did nothing wrong? He was so cold to her, so heartless... that was most-definitely doing something wrong. He looked up at her again slowly, biting his lip with guilt as he watched her cry. However, he saw her smile, and couldn't help but smile, as well. He shrugged his shoulders and once more averted his eyes toward the ground at his left. "It was wrong of me to yell at you." He said softly, the smile fading fast.
He paused once more, shaking his head and chuckling softly as if he thought something to be stupid or silly. "It's been two years since..." His voice trailed off and his eyes grew grave and sorrowful once more. Max couldn't bring himself to say it again. Since she died. He repeated it in his head and closed his eyes for a moment. After a short break, he spoke again. "It's childish of me to act this way after so long, but..." He searched for the right words to say. 'It's so hard being without her. He sighed deeply. "She just... meant... so much to me. A... and... losing her... s-so suddenly... "
Max managed to pull just enough courage to look up at her again, saddened by her tears. He shook his head slowly, gently wiping away them from her face. ”Please don’t cry Marie…” He pleaded gently. He hated hurting her like this – making her cry. He never meant to cause her any pain, and yet he felt that’s exactly what he did.

"And it was wrong of me to yell at you. We both made mistakes, everyone makes them." She said quietly. Her voice sounded happier than it had before. "I think there has been enough apologizing for one day." She added, squeezing Max's hands tighter, but not enough to hurt. More for comfort. She didn't want to cause him any more pain. She was glad that they could be there for each other. To help them get through situations and breakdowns like this one.
Her happiness faded slightly as Max continued to talk. Talk about the pain he was going through. He actually thought it was childish that he still felt hurt and despair. "No Max, it's not childish. Especially if it has only been two years." Marie said, her voice strong and firm, but it still sounded comforting and soft. "I know what you are going through. Trust me." She said her voice fading. She looked away from Max. She sighed quietly. "My..my younger sister died..." She broke off. Marie rarely told the story to anyone. In fact she didn't remember telling anyone. "It's been five years. Five years Max, and I still feel the way you do. I was the only one who was there when she died." She said, gaining a little bit of confidence, but not enough to block the sadness from her eyes or face.
She smiled a little as Max wiped away her tears. Her head slowly nodded. She was wordless though. Not knowing what to say. How to explain why she was crying. Because it sure wasn’t because of Max. Marie decided that she would stay silent. Just as her parents had told her when she tried to explain what happened that day. Another flashback surged through Marie’s body and mind. She closed her eyes tightly, hoping they would go away. She heard the voices of her father. The screams of her mother. The phone ringing. The police radio. Her eyes opened suddenly. The scene of Max’s room feeling comforting. She looked at Max, her eyes flooded with sadness and fear, but there was comfort in seeing Max again.

Max wanted to argue with her first statement. It wasn't wrong of her to yell at him. In fact, he probably deserved it for dumping all of this on her. But he most likely would've gone mad if he hadn't dumped it onto someone. Normally, Max wasn't the type of person to share his emotions with someone else other than through writing or music, but all of those bottled up feelings were starting to get to him. If he hadn't told someone, he probably would've attempted something stupid and crazy, like he had when April first died. He wanted to say something, yet he couldn't bring himself to words. He drew a deep breath, holding it for a moment as he locked his miserable green eyes onto Marie.
Max felt like he had so much to say, yet couldn't find the voice or the strength inside himself to say it. He sighed deeply, suddenly hugging Marie tightly, holding her close to him. He stroked her hair gently as he closed his eyes, trying to find comfort for both himself and for her, though he wasn't sure if he was ever going to find peace with April and her tragic death.

Marie smiled as Max wrapped his arms around her and gave her a hug. She hugged him back, never wanting to let go. "Max." She said and that's all she could say. She held him tightly. She found some type of comfort with just being with him. She turned her head towards his check and gently kissed him on the cheek. She let out a sigh, closing her eyes as she looked back over Max's shoulder.

Max sighed deeply as she said his name. He felt like he should speak again, like he needed to speak, and yet, he couldn't find the right words. He tried to calm himself, to relax as he held Marie in his arms silently. However, his mind was still buzzing with thoughts of both Marie and April. Everything had just been so frazzled since April had died, and just when things were staring to get a little better, they come up and practically choke to death once again.

Marie heard Max sigh. She lightly pulled away to see if Max wanted to let her go. Her eyes opened slowly. Something wasn't right. Something wasn't right at all. Marie felt like she had done something terrible, she just didn't know what. "Did I make things worse?" She asked quietly. She still held onto Max, but only because she didn't want to let go. She knew she would have to sooner or later.

Max opened his eyes slowly as well as he felt Marie pull away. He allowed her to, though still didn't let go of her completely. He blinked slowly, a but surprised by her question. He hesitated, however. Did I make things worse? No, she hadn't. He had made them worse when he started this whole thing, when he made his life miserable. He drew a deep, firm breath before answering, "No... no, of course not, Marie." He responded softly, shaking his head. "What gave you that idea?"
