Marie looked at Max. Her eyes full of pain and sympathy for him. It seems like the story of his life keeps getting worse and worse. She thought to herself. She couldn't believe that all of that happened to him, but she knew it was true. Marie could tell that he was hurting inside. "I..I" She tried to say, but couldn't. She didn't know what to say. How can he live with all of this pain? How can I help him? Does he want help? Does he Need help? She asked herself all of these questions and more. Marie looked at the ground as a single tear fell from her eye. She was crying for Max, for his life, for his past, for his history. She didn't want to let him see her crying because there was no reason for it. She didn't really succed though.

Max lifted his head a little, but still couldn't face Marie. He bit his lip, gently messing with the ring on the bottom of it. He was unsure what else to say to her, or what else to expect her to say or do. Really, he didn't tell many people his life story. He'd rather just keep it on the down low and to himself for it normally scared people and made them think he needed to be in some kind of therapy for all the grief he must be feeling. Plus, he didn't want a bunch of people feeling terrible for his sake and taking pity on him. He didn't need it.
I..I He heard her studder. Finally, his eyes fell over her as she hung her head. He looked confused by this. What was the matter with her all of the sudden? His jaw dropped. He was unsure what to do. He stopped suddenly, putting his hand on her shoulder in attempts to stop her from walking, as well. His eyes looked concerned as she began to cry. He never liked to see people cry. It made him feel terrible. This time was no different. His heart sank. "Hey, what's the matter?" He asked softly, his tone sounding alarmed by her behavior. His eyes were wide with anxiousness as he stared at her, waiting for a response.

Marie stopped walking, but she quickly wiped her tears away. "No..Nothing." She said quietly. She looked at him and gave him a small smile, looking back at the ground. She started to walk again, hoping he would just let go, but she doubted that he would though.

Max frowned again. No..Nothing. He sighed. He should've expected that kind of answer. As she started walking away, he gently grabbed her wrist, holding it lightly in her hand in attempts to hold her back, "No... Tell me." He said, a small smile beginning to creep across his face. He did look genuinely interested in her reasonings. He gave her an innocent look. "Please...?" He pouted his lips cutely. "I just gave you my life story. You owe it to me to at least tell me why you spontaneously burst into tears." He said jokingly as he chuckled lightly. He wanted to make her laugh again, or smile, or something. He didn't like to see people sad, especially if he caused it, which is what he began to wonder if he had or not. Perhaps his history was to much for her. It was for most people who were normally not as plagued with so much sorrow.

Marie turned towards him as he grabbed her wrist. She looked at him trying to smile, but couldn't. "I'm sorry." She whispered as she looked down at his hand on her wrist. Marie put her hand on his. She looked back at him, and saw him making a pouty face. She laughed a little bit. She suddenly remembered that she was supposed to be watching him. I won't turn him in. He doesn't deserve to be treated like a little kid! She thought, angry at herself and Head Master Highmore. Her smile faded a little bit.

Max smiled warmly at her as she looked at him. I'm sorry. He sighed again, shaking his head slowly, a little displeased that she wouldn't tell him. He looked down at her hand over his, then at the ground. He wished he knew what she was thinking. He looked back up at her again as she laughed, his eyes looking calmer and happier than before. He stepped closer to her as her smile faded, lightly putting his hand under her chin, gently lifting her head, looking into her eyes comfortingly. "Please tell me what's wrong." He asked, his voice still sounding soft and warm and understanding. His eyes dulled a little bit, though remained attentive to what she had to say. He was interested in helping her if she needed it, or at least being some comfort to her. As strange as it may have seemed, Max was actually a very kind person once you got to know him. Just because he had a crappy childhood and smoked didn't make him completely cruel and heartless.

Marie smiled. "It's fine, I just..I really don't know why I started to cry." She said her voice fading as she looked into his eyes. She slowly moved her hand up to his face and she put it softly on his cheek. She took her other hand and wrapped her arm around his neck, giving him a hug. "I won't turn you in." She whispered in his ear.

It's fine, I just..I really don't know why I started to cry. Max wasn't really overjoyed by her answer, but nodded in compassion. His smile widened a little as she put her hand on his cheek. He wrapped her arms around her waist gently, careful not to hold her to tightly or to close to him. He found it a little awkward to be hugging her at first -- they had just met, after all, and they really didn't get a chance to actually talk much, besides Max's explanation of his terrible life, and that wasn't really a conversation, more like a monologue. But, Marie seemed like a nice person. Maybe they could be friends, or at least Max's hoped they would be. They would be spending the next twelve months of their lives together for the most part. It would be a sucky twelve months if they ended up hating each other. But from the way things were going now, Max doubted they would even think about hating each other.
I won't turn you in. Max pulled back a little, but continued to hug her. He looked at her and smiled, his eyes shining with gratitude. Well, at least he wouldn't have to worry about smoking again. But, he would still have to be a bit more inconspicuous while doing so. He didn't want to get Marie into trouble. "Thank you." He said graciously with another small nod of approval.

Marie smiled as she gave him a tight squeze. "It's okay, but I'm still hoping that you won't." She said letting go of Max and taking a few steps back. "Now, I think we should get going." She added laughing a little. She didn't realize that what she had just done was awkward, but she did feel a little wierd about the whole thing. What did I just do?! She asked herself concerned. She tensed up a little but started walking. "Come on before your free period is over." She told him.

It's okay, but I'm still hoping that you won't. Max's smile faded a little. Well he couldn't really make any promises on that. He smoked and he will most-likely always smoke, and it will most-likely be the cause of his death one day. It helped him relax, made him feel calm, made his worries disappear if only for a day. He was addicted, and even if he ever felt the need to stop he doubted he would be able to.
Max let go of Marie just as she let go of him. He shoved his hands into the pockets of his jeans once more. His hair blew into his face, but he didn't bother to move it. Now, I think we should get going. He nodded, smiling as she laughed. He liked to hear people laugh. Come on before your free period is over. He followed her, walking beside her nonchalantly. "Okay. Do you mind if we run up to my room before we go to the caf? I want to grab some money." He asked, turning his eyes toward her in question. He had mentioned going to his dorm before, but decided to ask again in case she forgot or something. Or just as a reminder. Either way.
Max didn't normally get food from here, for two reasons; A., his money income was very low, and B., the food here wasn't all that good, or at least that's what he thought. Both he and Nina never ate much food, which was probably why they were both rather thin, though Nina was skinner than Max, along with much smaller and shorter. He often towered over her, despite the fact they were only two years apart, not that big of an age difference. Ah, well.

"Oh, right. Sorry I almost forgot." She said moving a piece of her hair behind her ear. She smiled lightly at Max. Maybe he isn't as bad as Highmore thinks. He seems nice. She thought, giggling out loud without noticing.

Oh, right. Sorry I almost forgot. Max shrugged. "You don't need to be sorry." He said softly, smiling at her. He tried to think of what his dorm room looked like, how messy it was. Oh well. He didn't care. They wouldn't be there long, he just needed some money.
(Should I start a new one at his dorm..?)
